How is lottery revenue distributed?

The lottery money is divided further into three major categories:

Firstly, usually, around 50-60% is distributed to the winners who win the lottery. This includes big jackpots and the prizes for matching the numbers announced randomly. Secondly, after paying the winner, there is some kind of commission that is to be given to the retailer for selling lottery books to the people at shops. The commission generally ranges for4%-8% appx. Thirdly, some part of the amount says 10% of the lottery revenue goes towards the administration cost and overheads for running such lottery games. Some of these include advertising, legal fees, salaries of staff, and some other kind of necessities. And then the rest of the left-over money goes to the several states those who participate in lottery games.

How do states use lottery revenue?

Each state participating in lottery games has its own rules and codes, and it’s up to them that how they can use the money that they arise through lottery funds.

Most states allocate some part of their revenue by addressing it to gambling addiction. Then a specific amount is kept as a general fund that can be used for budget shortfalls that are needed for services like roads, communication, transport, and some other social services that would benefit the state in the long run as there would be no shortage of funds.

The rest leftover a percentage of the fund is used for good causes or is allocated to public works like education, hospitals, schools. This part is generally given towards education either through public school funding or through scholarship programs.

Where does lottery money come from?

The money to the lottery winners is provided through the National Lottery fund, which was owned by the Camelot Group since, 1994. The national lottery fund is not short of money because the Camelot group rewards the national lottery franchise every five years, a decision which is taken up by the gambling commission.

Similarly, the Camelot group is never short of money because it was initially formed as an association to bid the national lottery by joining hands with individual partners like Cadbury Schweppes.
